My Husband's Son (Audible Audio Edition) Deborah O'Connor, Zara Ramm, Bolinda Publishing Pty Ltd Books Reviews

MY HUSBAND’S SON by Deborah O'Connor is a gripping debut psychological thriller about a woman who thinks she's found her husband's abducted son. And you will never believe the lengths this woman will go to prove she is right! She is obsessed with finding out the truth.

You'd always recognize your own son. Wouldn't you?

Heidi and Jason aren't like other couples.

Six years ago, Heidi's daughter was murdered. A year later, Jason's son Barney disappeared. Their shared loss brought them together.

By chance, Heidi meets a boy she's certain is Barney.

But Jason is equally convinced it's not him.

Is Heidi mad? Or is Jason hiding something? And can their fragile marriage survive Heidi's newfound quest for the truth…

Heidi and Jason had been brought together by personal tragedy. They had both lost their children.

The opening scene of the novel is one where a little boy is kidnapped. We move fast forward to a married couple Jason and Heidi, who met at a conference because they had both lost children. Jason, along with his then wife, Vicky had gone through so much after their son, Barney disappeared, that it had destroyed their marriage. Heidi’s daughter, Lauren was murdered.

So many false sightings and subsequent disappointments!

The story is narrated by Heidi, and she explains how on her way home from work she stopped at an off license and saw a boy that looked just like Barney. Heidi contacts Jason at work and brings him to the off license to see for himself…but he says the child is not Barney, and tells Heidi to drop it.

But Heidi is convinced that this child is Barney, and is determined to prove it. Heidi needs to find a link, no matter how small that links the off licence/or owner to Barney’s disappearance.

No more plot details because of possible Spoilers. You will just have to read the novel, to see what happens. Twisted ending that I did not expect.

Heidi’s quote “Life is a series of trade-offs, of choices considered and choices made. I have made my choice.”

Thank you to Deborah O'Connor, Bonnier Publishing Twenty7 and Netgalley for providing a digital ARC for review.
Heidi and Jason are a couple brought together by their shared experience of losing a child. Heidi's daughter was kidnapped and killed while Jason's son went missing and was never seen again. His life is consumed by finding Barney and the fact that Heidi understands his grief more than most people brings them together.

This book has a really interesting premise, Heidi believes that she's found Barney but Jason is convinced that she is wrong, but Heidi just cannot let it go. As the reader you're never quite sure whether Heidi is right or not, everything seems to be suggesting that he is not Barney, but could she be right?

I found Heidi to be really unlikeable. As a parent I can't help but feel compassion towards her for the loss of her daughter, but she makes some really really strange decisions that I just struggled to make sense of. I spent large portions of the book convinced that she was totally crazy, however I couldn't shake the nagging doubt that maybe she wasn't.

Jason meanwhile is a bit of a non event. He is clearly being eaten up by the loss of Barney, the not knowing what happened to him, and he isn't dealing at all well with it. Although who can blame him?!

I found My Husband's Son really easy to read, the author writes well and keeps the intrigue going throughout the book. The ending was nothing that I had imagined at any point while reading. It totally threw me, and confused me, and then once the shock had worn off it made me think.

I received a copy of My Husband's Son via Netgalley from the publishers in return for an honest review.
Not the best
I found this book tedious so about a third of the way through I jumped to the last chapter to see what happened.
GREAT PRODUCT SUPER FAST DELIVERY
Excellent, did miss most of my nights sleep as couldn't put it down until finished.
I really wanted to like the book but it's too draggy! The author went on and on and on about Heidi's clumsiness, her indecisiveness and her dead daughter's compass! There's no real substance except to keep repeating the same old Tommy, Barney/Mikey, Keith - and what happened to the reporter? What's his role in the whole book? I don't think very much of this book - sorry.
The heroine's behaviour is, at times, a little disconcerting and I'm not sure that the ending is totally plausible. It's a fairly quick read though and OK to fill the time between outstanding books.
