Something evil has come to town.
Larkin, Wisconsin has always been a quiet little place nestled away deep in the north woods. Sheriff Adam Dolton thought that his nightmares had been put to rest and the dark entity that was coming had been stopped.
He was wrong.

Barian, the manifestation of evil brought to life, has crossed over into our world and is set on destroying all in his quest for vengeance. Only Sheriff Dolton and a small group of survivors stand in his way.

This was the scariest book I've ever read and I've read the best. I thought the first book was scary but this one beat that one all to hell. DO NOT LET CHILDREN READ THIS BOOK !!!I am not even sure if adults should read these books. That said there.is no way I will miss the next one. This author must have a really twisted mind to dream this stuff up. However, he is a truly talented writer to make me feel like I'm right in the town along with those poor people. I think he has a brilliant future ahead. I hope to be reading his books for many years.
I read the first book in the daytime and was scared silly and I was still dumb enouh to read this one at night. Now I don't know if even sleeping pills will let me sleep tonight.
If you love horror and have a strong constitution, read this series. But you must start at the beginning or you will be lost. Turn on all the lights, fix a strong drink ( or coffee or tea, if that's your preferences ) and sit back and enjoy. Oh, and by the way, watch out for crows.

Fiend The Gathering Darkness eBook Phil Bolos Reviews
Another Fiend story.Another edge of your seat thriller!
I love the way he brings the character's along. Can evil get the upper hand and change life as we know it? Does goodness leave a door open giving evil another chance to regain power enough for another shot at success. I await the next offering
I gave this book five stars because if you like a good scary read this is the book. i read the first book, it was so good i went straight to this book and didn't put it down till i was finished. i will tell everyone who like horror inter twined with good and evil to read this book.
And the journey begins. Reminds me, in a sense, of our Louisiana author's earlier work, William W. Johnstone, When he wrote horror (the cats cradle, for one), it was in this vein and loved them all. Definitely looking forward for the next book in the trilogy.
.
This is a very good BOOK about evil vs. Good. The author does a good job entertaining readers with strong characters and has you sitting on the edge with support of the four "good" main characters. A MUST READ...but READ the first BOOK before you read this one to get a good feel of the characters role.
I quite enjoyed this book and felt a sense of horror pending on each page but finding myself reading further until the end. There are many twists and turns and near escapes but each has a deathly end almost.
A good novel for those who enjoy horror tales and strong characters.
So last week, I put up a review of Phil Bolos' Fiend The Manifestation, which I was underwhelmed by. Not a terrible book by any means, but not one I found memorable either. This week I finished up the sequel Fiend The Gathering Darkness. Unfortunately, the second time was not a charm.
The next chapter in the Fiend saga picks up where the first one left off. The survivors of the first book assemble in the real world (as opposed to the dream one that dominated the action in the first one) to face off against Barian, the titular Fiend, as he descends on the town of Larkin to exact the revenge he's been searching for.
There are some improvements in this book. The pacing is much faster and there is more satisfying action in this book than in the original. The plot also goes more in the direction of what the first book suggested. There is an explanation of why the villain picked the town of Larkin too, which was missing from the first book. Though the characters are somewhat generic still, they are likeable and you want them to persevere over the bad guy.
On the other hand, some of the issues from the first book persist. The dialogue feels stiff still, though it is less formal than the first book, and everyone has a very similar pattern and manner of speech. Barian's language, thankfully, has been toned down some and he doesn't sound as much like an evil wizard in a sword and sorcery novel anymore. Furthermore, for a horror book there is little in the form of scares. Though there are some surprising turns, the plot did not creep me out with the exception of one scene involving someone and a vat of acid which was quite well done.
Overall, though, this book suffers from a fatal flaw - the same one that surfaced in the first book. Quite simply there's not enough in the characters, the plot, or the concept to make me want to read the next book. If I had not already bought this book, I don't think I would have read it after finishing the first one. The lack of tension and scares will not compel many veteran horror fans and in an age where time is increasingly pressed by competing demands, the book simply takes too long to tell the story. After nearly 600 pages, I feel like this entire series could have been handled in half of that page count.
Like most books, however, there's an audience for this book - it's just not me. For those who see most modern horror novels as lurid and repulsive in their violence, this might be a book for you. It has a writing style and tells a tale more in line with novels of days gone by where the audience was not as jaded and did not need a "hard core gore" factor or one of the trifecta of Zombies/EMP/Super Virus to grab the readers attention. I don't say that. I don't say that as a means of to condescend to the story that Mr. Bolos has written I'm simple expressing my feelings that the book did not speak to me. While that's okay, the score ultimately has to reflect that.
Score 3 (Out of a Possible 5)*
* Nota Bene As with any review, this score reflects my personal opinion, not objective fact. Your mileage may vary.
